“The military instilled the values I have today about public service and thinking of us as a whole, rather than just me.”

— Brian Stowell, CLCV XI

Q: Why do you care deeply about the success of this region?

A:  I care so much about my region because we are absolutely an inclusive community. All people are represented here and included! We are a true melting pot. As Fred Rodgers stated himself “won’t you be my neighbor” we appreciate all, and embrace those of different race and culture. Pittsburgh is a great place to live and strive!

Q: Have you always been a leader or drawn to leadership roles? If no, what has changed? If yes, what has driven you to stay involved as a leader?

A: Absolutely not! So I am ex-military and really just liked to be in the mix, I didn’t want to stand out. Same as in high school. Based on terminology today, we would have been considered homeless. So I never wanted the spotlight on me. Leadership Pittsburgh Inc. changed my perspective, and what I feel is my duty to help others! I plan on being on the board of an organization that helps others come to our region, and build success for their introduction into this community.

Q: What identities or lived experiences have shaped who you are as a leader? How do these influence your leadership goals and leadership style?

A: Honestly, I feel that my upbringing really set me up to accept everyone, and meet them where they are at. The military also instilled the values I have today about public service and thinking of us as a whole, rather than just me.
