– Sabrina Saunders Mosby, LDI XVII – President and CEO, Vibrant Pittsburgh
Q: What does community leadership mean to you?
A: Community leadership is deeply personal— it’s about creating a sustainable and meaningful impact. It involves being selfless, building trust, nurturing relationships, and inspiring others to take initiative. It means recognizing that no person or issue is more important than another. By promoting unity and leveraging our collective strengths, community leadership helps to create a resilient, thriving, and vibrant community.
Q: What is your proudest achievement as a community leader?
A: My proudest accomplishment as a community leader involves establishing impactful programs with a lasting legacy. Notably, initiatives like the Black Male Leadership Development Institute Saturday Program and the African American Achievement Trust Collective Focus have significantly enriched the lives of hundreds of youth. Additionally, expanding the reach and depth of the Vibrant Index, the Pittsburgh region’s DEI assessment tool, has provided crucial DEI recommendations to businesses in the region for five years. These efforts are central to my professional legacy, driving meaningful community development and impacting numerous lives.
Q: Please share a regional issue that is important to you. How can individuals help move this issue forward?
A: I believe in the power of representation—and that our children should see themselves reflected throughout the community and in all opportunities. For this vision to materialize, Pittsburgh must focus on retaining a diverse talent pool, especially within the Black community. Losing such talent not only hampers our inclusivity but also stalls economic progress. Effective retention begins with fostering inclusive workplace cultures that promote genuine belonging. Everyone, regardless of position, should understand the local diversity landscape and apply proven inclusivity practices. An excellent place to start is delving into Vibrant Pittsburgh’s Report to the Region and encouraging your organization to participate in Vibrant Index 6.0 (coming January 2025).
Q: What is your hope for the future of this region?
A: We find ourselves once more at a pivotal juncture in the journey toward diversity, equity, and inclusion. My hope is that our region will embrace the transformative potential of DEI initiatives, not just as a pathway to greater fairness and opportunity for our people, but as a cornerstone for the economic and cultural prosperity of our region
