Favorite Thing About the Region: Our connections bind us personally and professionally, and it is these connections that create total success for the region.

Q: What has been your proudest moment as a civic leader?

A: I have had so many here in Pittsburgh…

A recent one is the ability to create programs and pathways that are going to change generations of people’s lives.  It’s about listening to the needs of the greater community and developing programs, certificates, and degrees, and to give individuals who would not necessarily have access the opportunity to access higher education.  These programs will lift these individuals up, and thus our communities up, and that is what it is all about.

Another proud moment was recently being names a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania by Governor Josh Shapiro.

Our connections bind us personally and professionally, and it is these connections that create total success for the region.

Q: Why do you care deeply about the success of this region?

This is my home.  When the region is successful, everything that we do is affected by it.  It is about the people to me.  Helping our communities and our people be prosperous, working to consider the totality of our communities, and working to help every one of us rise – I care deeply about this region because of the people.

“I had to learn how to stand up and make sure my voice was heard.”

— Dr. Kathy Humphrey, LP XXIII

Q: What identities or lived experiences have shaped who you are as a leader? How do these influence your leadership goals and leadership style?

I believe that my leadership goes back to my childhood.  I am the 10th of 12 children.  I had to learn how to stand up and make sure my voice was heard, so I got a lot of practice at home making my point. I also learned by watching others lead as well.  My parents insisted that we were people who would give back, and I took that to heart.  In addition, every team that I have worked on, and with, has shaped my leadership.  LPInc. also shaped who I am.  LPInc. gave me a network of knowledge, people, places, and industries just by participating in the program and being on the Board.  It was influential in shaping me as a Pittsburgher.  Now, I know this person, this official, this leader, this entity, and I can just pick up the phone and call them.  It’s how our city works and it keeps us connected.
